Homemade grain-free dog treats recipes

Let’s start off with some great homemade grain free dog treat recipes, like stated above we want simple ingredients, healthy ingredients and tastes your dog will love.

Grain free dog treats baked in the oven require flour to bind and bake. The most common flours available to use are coconut flour, nut flours like almond flour, oat flour, rice flour and ancient grains like quinoa.

Another popular ingredient that dogs absolutely love that you can add to your grain less dog treats is peanut butter. The smell alone will have your pups salivating when it’s treat time. Best of all you can choose your own peanut butter from either the store, or make your own from home as some peanut butter’s might have more sugar in them then you want.

We all know how much dogs love meat, so a delicious protein like chicken or eggs, fish or beef will get your dog drooling and waiting on it’s best behavior.

Here is a Fool Proof Recipe you Can Use, Transform and Master for your Dog Treats

You can mix and match flours of your choice and proteins, just maintain the ratios listed below and they will turn out great everytime.

  • 1 1/2 Cup Flour (Rice, Almond, Oat, Quinoa, Coconut or any other grain free flour)
  • 1/2 Cup Peanut Butter
  • 1/2 Cup Oil (Coconut Preferably) if you want less oil and more protein you can go with 1/4 Oil and 1-2 eggs or no oil and 2-3 eggs

Optionally you can add mashed banana, pureed sweet potato or pumpkin or if you want to eliminate all oil use 1 less egg and about 1/3 cup of pureed banana, sweet potato or pumpkin.

You will want your mixture to be firm where you can mold it into your hand similar to cookie dough. If for some reason your dough is too wet, wait 5-10 minutes as some flours tend to take more time to absorb wet ingredients. If at this point it is too wet add 2 tbsp of flour and mix, keep adding if still too wet.

Preheat oven to 350 deg F. Roll the dough out on either a lightly floured surface or use parchment paper until it is 1/4 inch thick. At this point you start cutting out your pieces of dog treats with your doggie cookie cutters. You can buy great pet cookie cutter shapes here.

Place them on a cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until brown around edges and hard. If you are using puree’s like banana or sweet potato you will want to bake for 30-40 minutes. Since this is a mix and match recipe we recommend keeping an eye on them every 5 minutes or so after 20 minutes minimum. Every oven and altitude is different.
