WTB Vulpine 700C Tire Review

The WTB Vulpine 700C Tire is designed for gravel enthusiasts looking for a tire that can handle both on-road and off-road conditions seamlessly. This tire combines advanced features with a thoughtful design that prioritizes performance, durability, and versatility.

Key Features

  • Dual DNA Compound: Utilizes two rubber compounds for enhanced durability and lower rolling resistance, making it ideal for race-ready gravel biking.
  • TCS Light Casing: Available in a single-ply, 60TPI option and a 120TPI option with Slash Guard puncture protection, ensuring a lightweight yet robust tire.
  • Low Rolling Resistance: The tightly spaced center knobs and almost continuous centerline tread design provide exceptional speed on pavement while still maintaining grip on gravel and hardpack surfaces.
  • Tubeless Compatible: Designed for tubeless setups which allow for better traction, a smoother ride, and reduced risk of flats.
  • Weight: The TCS Light version weighs approximately 381-391 grams, while the TCS Light + Slash Guard version weighs around 434 grams.

Benefits

One of the standout benefits of the WTB Vulpine 700C Tire is its versatility. Whether you are racing on gravel roads or commuting on pavement, this tire provides the necessary traction and speed. The dual compound rubber enhances durability while allowing for efficient rolling, which is crucial for long-distance rides. Additionally, the option for tubeless compatibility means users can enjoy a smoother experience and fewer flats, making it a practical choice for adventurous cyclists.

Potential Drawbacks

While the WTB Vulpine 700C Tire excels in many areas, there are a few drawbacks to consider. The tire's performance may not be as optimal in extremely muddy conditions due to its tread design, which is better suited for hardpack and gravel. Additionally, the price point could be a consideration for budget-conscious riders, as it may be higher than some entry-level gravel tires.

Comparison with Similar Products

When compared to other gravel tires on the market, such as the Schwalbe G-One or the Panaracer GravelKing, the WTB Vulpine stands out due to its unique Dual DNA compound and TCS Light casing. While the Schwalbe G-One offers a more aggressive tread pattern for mud and loose surfaces, the Vulpine's design is optimized for speed and stability on mixed terrains. The GravelKing provides excellent puncture resistance but may not match the Vulpine's low rolling resistance on pavement.

Practical Tips for Use

  1. Optimal Pressure: Ensure that you are using the correct tire pressure for your weight and riding conditions. A lower pressure can enhance grip and comfort on gravel, while a higher pressure can improve speed on pavement.
  2. Sealing Tubeless: If using the tubeless option, make sure to properly seal the tire with high-quality sealant to prevent leaks and maximize performance.
  3. Regular Inspection: Frequently check for any punctures or abrasions, particularly if riding in rough terrain. Early detection can save you from more significant issues later.

Complementary Products

Customers often pair the WTB Vulpine 700C Tire with tubeless sealant, such as Orange Seal or Stan's NoTubes, to enhance puncture protection. Additionally, a good quality floor pump with a pressure gauge is recommended for maintaining optimal tire pressure. Finally, consider investing in a reliable bike repair kit for on-the-go fixes.

Current Trends and Innovations

The trend in gravel biking is moving towards tires that provide greater versatility and performance across varied terrains. The WTB Vulpine 700C Tire fits well within this trend by offering a tire that excels both on pavement and gravel. Innovations in tubeless technology and advanced rubber compounds are becoming standard, and the Vulpine's features reflect these advancements, making it a competitive option in the gravel tire market.

In summary, the WTB Vulpine 700C Tire is an excellent choice for gravel riders seeking a reliable and high-performance tire that balances speed and grip. Its innovative features and design make it suitable for a variety of riding conditions, ensuring that it meets the demands of both casual cyclists and serious racers alike.
