Neumann U 47 Fet Collectors Edition With Stand Mnt

The U 47 FET is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with a cardioid directional characteristic and FET 80 circuit technology. This technology, also used in the U 87, is characterized by a wide dynamic range. Like its predecessor, the U 47, the U 47 FET employs the K 47 capsule which features a slight boost in the frequency response above 2 kHz. If required, a switchable low-cut filter raises the lower cutoff frequency electronically from 40 Hz to 140 Hz, and switchable attenuation can reduce transmission levels by 10 dB. In addition, to prevent overloading of the connected preamp, the output signal can be reduced by 6 dB via a switch on the bottom of the microphone.

Comprehensive Review of the Neumann U 47 FET Collector's Edition

The Neumann U 47 FET Collector's Edition with Stand Mount is a prestigious addition to any audio engineer’s arsenal. Renowned for its impeccable sound quality and versatility, this large-diaphragm condenser microphone is designed to meet the demands of studio professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Key Features

  • Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone: Provides a rich, warm sound that is ideal for vocals and instruments.
  • Cardioid Directional Characteristic: Effectively isolates the target sound source while minimizing background noise.
  • FET 80 Circuit Technology: Delivers a wide dynamic range, similar to the iconic U 87 model.
  • K 47 Capsule: Features a slight boost in frequency response above 2 kHz, enhancing clarity and presence.
  • Switchable Low-Cut Filter: Allows users to raise the lower cutoff frequency electronically from 40 Hz to 140 Hz, useful for reducing low-frequency rumble.
  • Switchable Attenuation: Reduces transmission levels by 10 dB to prevent distortion from high sound pressure levels.
  • Output Signal Reduction: A 6 dB reduction switch on the bottom of the microphone prevents overloading of connected preamps.

Benefits

The U 47 FET is celebrated for its versatility across various recording applications, from vocals to instruments. Its ability to handle high sound pressure levels without distortion makes it a go-to choice for live recordings and studio sessions alike. The switchable features add a layer of flexibility, allowing users to tailor the microphone's response to their specific recording needs.

Potential Drawbacks

While the U 47 FET boasts numerous advantages, it comes with a premium price tag that may not be accessible for all users. Additionally, the cardioid pattern, while effective for isolating sound, may not be ideal for every recording scenario, such as capturing ambient sounds or in situations where multiple sound sources are present.

Comparison to Similar Products

When compared to other microphones in its class, such as the AKG C414 and the Shure KSM44A, the U 47 FET stands out for its unique tonal characteristics and build quality. While the C414 offers multiple polar patterns and versatility, and the KSM44A provides a warm sound, the U 47 FET is often preferred for its signature clarity and presence in the upper mid-range frequencies.

Practical Tips for Use

  1. Placement: Experiment with microphone placement. For vocals, try positioning it slightly above the mouth and angling it downward to capture a more natural sound.
  2. Pop Filter: Use a pop filter to minimize plosive sounds when recording vocals.
  3. Low-Cut Filter: Engage the low-cut filter for vocal recordings or when capturing instruments in a cluttered low-frequency space.
  4. Attenuation Switch: Utilize the attenuation switch for loud sources, such as drums or guitar amplifiers, to avoid clipping.

Complementary Products

To enhance the recording experience, consider pairing the U 47 FET with:

  • Neumann 184: A small-diaphragm condenser mic that excels in capturing detail for instruments, providing a great contrast to the U 47 FET’s warm sound.
  • Universal Audio Apollo Interface: A high-quality audio interface that ensures the best signal path and conversion for the U 47 FET.
  • Cloudlifter CL-1: A microphone activator that provides additional gain without noise, ideal for low-output microphones.

These products work well in combination, enhancing the overall recording quality and expanding your studio's capabilities.

Current Trends and Innovations

The microphone market is seeing a trend towards hybrid technology, blending traditional analog warmth with digital precision. The U 47 FET exemplifies this trend with its FET circuitry, offering the best of both worlds. Additionally, the growing demand for versatility in recording environments makes the U 47 FET's switchable features particularly relevant and valuable in today’s audio landscape.
